Квантові мережі є найважливішою частиною захищеної постквантової комунікації та розподілених квантових обчислень. Реалізація квантових зв’язків на великій відстані вимагає ефективних спін-фотонних інтерфейсів, які працюють у телекомунікаційному діапазоні, що може бути досягнуто за допомогою оптично адресованих парамагнітних дефектів. Гексагональний нітрид бору (hBN) є дуже багатообіцяючою платформою завдяки своїй широкій забороненій зоні та здатності вміщувати кілька випромінювачів поодиноких фотонів. У той час як внутрішні дефекти, такі як від’ємно заряджена вакансія бору, широко досліджувалися як потенційні кандидати на кубіти, різні легуючі домішки досліджуються з вуглецем, що привертає значну увагу через здатність утворювати комплекси та взаємодіяти з іншими відомими спіновими дефектами. Досліджено заміщення вуглецю, що займає позиції решітки бору та азоту в об’ємному hBN, використовуючи теорію функціоналу густини з функціоналами мета-GGA. Обчислено енергію утворення, електронну структуру та щільність станів у різних конфігураціях заряду та визначено, як легування заміщенням впливає на рівень дефектів у забороненій зоні. До того ж вивчено збуджений стан цих дефектів, який утворений пов’язаним з дефектом екситоном, здатним працювати при низьких температурах. Отримані результати підкреслюють важливість вуглецевих дефектів і розширюють діапазон потенційних систем для квантової комунікації та зондування.
